Practice using gear and learn new skills while car camping in a low stress environment.

In this class, we will learn the basics of maps, compasses, and using them together to get ourselves from point A to B. Plan to start indoors and move outdoors for hands-on practice. Wear clothing and footwear that will keep you comfortable and prepare for the chance of mud. All mobility abilities welcome: please note if you have mobility concerns during registration so that accommodations can be made.

But Aren't You AFRAID?! Practical Tips for Adventuring Safely (Online)
As a woman who often goes solo on backcountry adventures, this is a common question I've been asked. People mean well with their concern for my safety, but how nervous should I be? In this online class, we'll review statistics for hazards one might encounter in the Minnesota backcountry and include some how-tos for planning safer adventures.

Have you wanted to go explore a wilderness area or national park, but feel bogged down by permitting systems? This class will include a general overview of how to use Recreation.gov, the federal site that manages many backcountry permits and campgrounds. We’ll highlight how to book BWCA overnight permits and Superior National Forest campsites. You’ll have a chance to submit questions in advance to learn how to acquire permits for other areas.

Let’s get off the beaten path! Join this session to brainstorm with other like minds and learn about lesser known spots to explore the outdoors in the region. Friends of the Superior National Forest and Wilderness Volunteers Meet-n-Greet
Stop by Wild State Cider in Duluth MN to support two great organizations: Friends of the Superior National Forest and Wilderness Volunteer. Enjoy a cider or n/a beverage (or nothing) and chat with cool people from these organizations to learn about the cool work they do and how you can be involved.

South Kawishiwi River Campground Cleanup with Friends of the Superior National Forest
Free! Join us for 1 or 2 days stewarding the beautiful South Kawishiwi River Campground! Located outside of Ely, this campground has a local trail that needs basic maintenance. Distance covered will be approximately a mile. Volunteers will also clean up any trash and may work on additional duties as identified by Forest Service staff. Camping provided.

Isabella Invasive Species Removal with Friends of the Superior National Forest
Free! The old environmental learning center site near Isabella, Minnesota, has been identified by USFS as a place with many needs regarding invasive species. We will be branching out through the area over the course of the day. This area is a fascinating mix of nature and abandoned infrastructure, which will make for an interesting project location!

All mobility abilities welcome: please note if you have mobility concerns during registration so that accommodations can be made.
Optional: If students would like to purchase a compass to take home they can bring $20 to be paid to the instructor the night of class.
Navigation for Young Explorers (ages 7 - 11) with Cloquet Community Ed
Calling all explorers! In this class, we’ll learn how to find direction with a compass and read a map. Then we’ll use our new skills on a scavenger hunt around the park! Please dress for the weather and prepare for the chance of bugs.
Participants will receive a simple compass to take home. All mobility abilities welcome: please note if there are mobility concerns during registration so that accommodations can be made.
